Traditionally, runes are carved onto stones or pieces of wood, one symbol per piece. The runestones are then "cast" - either pulled from their carry sack individually or in groups and placed or thrown down. The orientation of the stones are important - runes can be either "normal" or "reversed" depending on whether they land face up or down - alternately, whether they are drawn from the runesack with the rune right-side up or upside down.
There are many ways to cast the runes, and many reasons. Some folks cast their runestones onto a blank cloth, reading them from the center out. Others use a casting diagram, each section shading the meaning of the stones so cast.
The style of rune-casting presented here is equivalent to drawing one runestone at a time and placing it onto a diagram in a specific order. Runes will either be normal or reversed. There are a couple of diagrams for you to choose from - a 5 rune diagram and a 7 rune diagram.
Before you begin, you should think of a general question. Interpret the runes in light of that question.
It is important to remember that this form of divination is to help you understand and interpret your question. It's up to you to meditate on the meaning of the runes and seek your own inner enlightenment. The runestones don't order you to do anything. They merely open your mind to new possibilities.

Think about your question, then draw a runestone. It will be placed on the diagram, and a description will be written below. |
